San Angelo ISD High School Students Visit Howard College During Shannon Health Science Symposium

San Angelo ISD is proud to partner with Shannon Health, the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Corporation, Howard College, and Angelo State University to offer the second annual exclusive four-part symposium series, the Shannon Health Science Symposium Series, to SAISD high school students following a health sciences pathway and interest.

On Friday, April 5, 2024, students were hosted by Howard College to gain insight into the nine healthcare pathways of study available to them including registered nurse, LVN to RN transition, vocational nursing, registered medical assistant, respiratory care, EMS, surgical technology, radiologic technology, and computed tomography, and see first hand the other learning options available if they choose Howard College as their post-secondary institution. Students broke out into groups and rotated through six rotations to gain insight into what a Howard College healthcare student would experience during their studies. Rotations included exploring pathways available to them at Howard and healthcare specific pathways, general education requirements, a tour of the student services building and library, lunch in the cafeteria, and a fun inspired healthcare themed lab.

“It is important for our students to be exposed to all post-secondary opportunities in our community. We are fortunate to have Howard College and Angelo State University, along with our industry partner, Shannon Medical Center, right here in San Angelo,” said Director of Career and Technical Education Roxanne Fentress. “With the continued demands for employment in the healthcare field, it is imperative that we begin preparing students in high school for these careers and sustain the pipeline for employment or further education once our students graduate.”

The Shannon Health Science Symposium Series took place over the course of the 2023-2024 school year. During the series, students had an opportunity to discover the health science programs available at Angelo State University and Howard College and learn more about the many departments within Shannon’s facilities here in San Angelo. At the conclusion of the symposium series, students who participated will have the opportunity to apply for the Margaret Shannon Educational Assistance Program, which provides financial and educational support for those students pursuing post-secondary healthcare careers such as nursing, radiology technician, surgical technician, physical therapy, and many more. The Margaret Shannon Scholarship is a full tuition paid educational assistance program.

The Shannon Health Science Symposium goal is to provide SAISD students insight and visualization into the pathways they can pursue in any health science field. Join SAISD in thanking our partners who helped make the Shannon Health Science Symposium Series possible, supporting opportunities for our health science pathway students to prepare for their future, whatever that future may be.
